Explorador

Song by Fother Muckers
From the album Justo y Necesario

The first time I listened to this song it got me very confused because in it, Cristóbal Briceño sings exactly like Juan Gabriel, and as I said before in a previous incarnation of The Headphonist, it's not like a "modern version" of Juanga, but this could perfectly be a B-side of "No tengo dinero", from 1972.

Anyway, this is a great song in its own right. Perfectly executed pop rock and a very contagious melody, with lyrics talking about exploring the world and loving its people. I always use it as a backing track for my hiking stories on Instagram.

Me iré a recorrer el mundo
A conocerlo por completo
Voy a probar cada plato típico

Voy a subir cada montaña
Sumergirme en cada océano
A mirar cada pelea
Con cuidado de no participar en ninguna

If you don't know Cristóbal Briceño, you should explore some of his albums and projects. He's really, really good, and has gems like this one scattered all over his work. I already have two more songs lined up to go up here in the coming days.

No tengo ganas

Song by Intoxicados
From the album No es sólo rock and roll

I didn't know the band Intoxicados. I stumbled upon them today through my last.fm recommendations, and was met with this song, which I loved immediately.

At first I thought it was the lyrics. I like simple songwriting, the kind that uses simple words to convey strong feelings. It starts like this:

No tengo ganas de seguir
Pero tampoco tengo ganas de parar
Tendría que pensar que me esta pasando
Pero es que estoy cansado de pensar.

In English, without the rhyming:

I don't feel like keep going
But I also don't want to stop
I should think about what's happening to me
But I'm also tired of thinking

It's so simple and generic, yet it perfectly describes a mental state of depression that keeps you from functioning properly, and anxiety that doesn't allow you to let go. And I'm pretty familiar with that feeling.

Later in the day, I was driving to get food with my girlfriend and I played it for her. Her comment was: "Of course you love it! it sounds exactly like Andrés Calamaro!"

And it does. It really does. Especially the live version (here in the Apple Music link). Apparently I can't stop listening to Calamaro, even when I'm not actually listening to Calamaro.

Anyway, I need to keep exploring the band, but this song is here to stay.

Civil Twilight

Song by The Weakerthans
From the album Reunion Tour

I knew about The Weakerthans for “Sun in an empty room” from the intro of Jonathan Goldstein’s incredible podcast Heavyweight. I had Reunion Tour on my Library for a while, but it’s in the last few months that I’ve been coming back to it. I find their sound nostalgic, but very pleasing and relaxing. There’s an inherent sadness in the delivery of even the joyful melodies and lyrics. And that’s my shit.

Civil Twilight is incredible.

I’ve always hated, to varying degrees throughout my life, that most songs in the world are about love or romantic loss. I still consider it lazy and unnecessary, but this kind of song is the exception.

Civil Twilight is a song about grieving an old relationship, yes, but it’s told from the point of view of a bus driver that constantly (every hour) has to drive by an old house where their partner broke up with them.

Reading further about this song, I learned that some people think it's about a past commuter that no longer takes the bus. I personally think it's too much of a stretch, but that would actually make it even more poetic.

Regardless, how John K. Samson comes up with these ideas, I don’t know. But I’m glad he does. It’s poetry, from the title to the guts, and I love it so much.

Porter for Axel

Playlist by Francisco Bernal

I have a lot of friends who are fans of Porter, but honestly, I've never really connected with their music. I even saw them play live once at a festival, and it was “meh.”

I was talking about that a couple of weeks ago at a friend's house, and I asked Paco, one of my friends and a Porter fan, to make me a Porter 101: a playlist with some essential songs I should listen to in order to appreciate what Porter is. And he delivered.

This is the playlist he made. It's short, only six songs, which I found lovely. And listening to it, I changed my opinion and I'm loving it. I think I never gave myself the chance to sit down and just listen without judging, and I also now think Porter, at least for me, is a band to sit down and listen to, and not neccesarily a band for a live concert (I'm sure most people would disagree). I certainly never gave it the chance in this part of my life. The lyrics are so simple but so deep, in addition, obviously, to being super psychedelic.

I'm already revisiting their older material and plan to keep going until I get through the whole thing. My opinions may change, but I'm enjoying that trip so much.

Thanks, Paco! <3

No Children

There are a lot of love songs out in the world, but very few hate songs. And between those few, this one is king.

Take the most intense and passionate love song you know, make it its opposite version, and you’re not even close to this.

I don’t personally identify with the lyrics, but they give me chills regardless. John Darnielle says it’s a song about having it really bad and staying in the moment, feeling and embracing the pain.

I am drowning, there is no sign of land. You are coming down with me, hand in unlovable hand. And I hope you die, I hope we both die.

That’s not even the worst part.

Enjoy!

Suzanne

When I was 19 I worked at a tiny graphic design studio, and one of the owners/bosses had one wall-sized rack filled with compact discs. Hundreds of CDs.

The first time I saw that wall I was in awe, and asked the guy if I could borrow some albums to listen back home. His answer was: “yes, of course, with three conditions:"

You borrow one at a time and play the whole thing

You bring it back

You borrow this one first

He handed me Songs of Leonard Cohen and I happily went home.

I’m sure Suzanne was the first Cohen song I listened to, because it was the first track on that album. I was immediately captivated by the poetry, the voice, and the chill and relaxed melody that somehow gave hints of angst and desperation.

I have so much love for this song, not only because of the anecdote, but because it was the one song that led me to dig more into Leonard Cohen’s body of work.

El Mundo en que Nací

I've never heard this Café Tacvba album in full, just random songs that appear here and there, and this song had somehow escaped that serendipity until now. I stumbled upon an interview with Meme del Real on YouTube, and they were talking about a very specific, extremely emotional rendition of this song on a concert. I searched for it and listened, and I cried for the better part of an hour.

I love how Meme's lyrics are always very simple but super expressive. The subject of this song, the love for a child and the fears of parenthood are already touching, and the melody completes an emotional bomb that obliterates me. It's a happy sadness what I get from these kind of songs.

Right now I'm specially sensitive for father-kid songs, and this one is, so far, the best I've encountered.

Golden Slumbers

Song by Andrés Calamaro
From the album Las otras caras de la alta suciedad

Andrés Calamaro covers this song a dirty, sad, very raw way. I imagine him half-drunk at 4am recording in the kitchen, and the resulting song is so much better, at least in emotionally, than the original from The Beatles.

It makes me tear up. It reminds me of my youngest son and his constant fears, his struggles with making sense of it all. Every time I listen to the song I feel the urge to go to him, hold him and tell them that everything's gonna be fine. And I often do.

Sleep, pretty darling, do not cry. I will sing you a lullaby.

Fashion Nugget

Album by Cake

I first learned about Cake from Prolonging the Magic (because of Never There, of course, thanks MTV!). After that, I went back and got my hands on Fashion Nugget and although I found it weird at first, it slowly grewon me. I remember being dumbfounded by phrases like “Friend is a four-letter word”, as I was still learning English and those kinds of expressions escaped me.

Strangely, it doesn’t remind me of the 90s. I feel like Cake as a band is its own thing, and they don't really sound like any of the bands of the era. It’s a good and chill listen. I wish I had a beer in hand.

Today, listening carefully and not doing anything else, I decided Sad Songs and Waltzes is my new favorite song from this album.
